Esensi dari 'gaya' yang dipahami saat ini seringkali dimaksudkan sebagai tampilan, atau cara, atau sesuatu yang memberikan kita image atau gambaran tentang seni, apakah itu arsitektur atau seni lainnya. Artikel ini saya buat untuk memikirkan kembali makna 'gaya' dan 'modern'. Meskipun keduanya tidak secara langsung berhubungan, tapi 'modern' seringkali disebut sebagai 'gaya', meskipun sebenarnya lebih berkaitan dengan metode dan pola pikir mendesain. Apa yang terpikir disini juga bukan sebuah jawaban atas apakah kita butuh 'bergaya' atau tidak.

Gaya modern, terdiri dari dua kata yang melambangkan makna berbeda, dalam kata majemuk ini, modern merupakan keterangan terhadap gaya, seperti 'klasik' memberikan keterangan terhadap gaya dalam kata majemuk 'gaya klasik'. Seseorang yang memiliki gaya atau style, disebut dengan kata sifat 'stylish' atau 'bergaya'. Stylish adalah kata sifat yang diambil dari bahasa Inggris style. Style dapat diartikan sebagai berikut:

Quality that marks out something done or made as superior, fashionable or distinctive (kualitas yang menandai sesuatu dikerjakan atau dibuat sebagai superior, fashionable atau mudah dikenali)
Fashion in dress, etc (fashion dalam pakaian, dan sebagainya)
General appearance, form or design, kind or sort (tampilan secara umum, bentuk atau desain, macam)

Arti dari kata tersebut memberi gambaran tentang kualitas rancangan yang sifatnya lebih dari biasanya, kadangkala dihubungkan dengan fashionable, atau modis. Meskipun demikian, gaya tidak selalu sesuai atau selaras dengan keinginan atau interpretasi pengamat. Misalnya: orang yang memakai 'gaya punk' dalam fashionnya, mungkin tidak terlalu appealing di mata mereka yang menyukai 'gaya konvensional' dalam berpakaian.


Ingatlah bahwa (kiri): 'gaya' tidak selalu terlihat sesuai, tapi digunakan karena disukai. Atau bisa juga (kanan): sebenarnya tidak ingin bergaya, tapi karena sudah ada gaya dalam apa yang fungsional, maka seperti itulah gayanya yang 'irresistible'


Gaya yang baik, terkadang dikatakan 'baik' karena sesuai masa dan tempatnya.

Demikian pula dalam arsitektur, 'gaya modern' mungkin bagus atau appealing bagi satu orang, tapi tidak bagi yang lain. 'Gaya klasik' mungkin disukai golongan tertentu, tapi tidak untuk golongan lainnya. Seperti musik, ada yang menyukai musik jazz, ada pula yang dangdut. Dalam konteks desain bangunan, rupanya hal ini juga berlaku.


Perbedaan pada masing-masing 'gaya' arsitektur, yang terkadang mencoba tampil paling 'wah' diantara yang lain, banyak dikritik oleh budayawan.

Gaya arsitektur, terlepas dari digunakan atau tidaknya, sebenarnya merupakan faktor tambahan dalam desain, yang seperti jenis baju atau busana yang dipakai. Semua orang memakai baju, tapi dengan gaya yang berbeda-beda. Arsitektur juga memiliki fungsi yang kurang lebih sama melalui proses programatik ruangnya, tapi gaya arsitekturnya dapat berbeda, sebagai finishingnya. Tapi faktor lain disamping gaya arsitektur, sebenarnya cukup banyak.

ENGLISH VERSION: What style are you?

Style, like the style of modern architecture, minimalist architecture, classic architectural style, we often hear. The essence of 'style' is often understood to be intended as a displayed facade, or something that gives us imagery or picturesque of art, whether it's architecture or other arts. I created this article to rethink the meaning of 'style' and 'modern'. Although they are not directly related, but the 'modern' is often referred to as 'style'. What occurred here is not an answer to whether we need a 'style' or not.

Modern style, consisting of two words that symbolize different meanings, modern in this compound word, is a description of the modern style, such as 'classic' provides information of the style in the compound word 'classic style'. Someone who has a style, called with the adjective 'stylish'. Style can be defined as follows:

Quality that marks out something done or made as superior, fashionable or Distinctive
Fashion in dress, etc (fashion in clothing, etc.)
General appearance, form or design, kind or sort

The meaning of the word stylish is more than usual, sometimes associated with being fashionable. However, style is not always consistent or in harmony with the desire or the interpretation of the observer. For example: people who wear 'punk' fashion, probably not too appealing in the eyes of those who love 'conventional style' of fashion.

Remember that the (left): 'style' does not always look appropriate, but is used as preferred. Or it could be (right): really do not want to style, but because there is force in what is functional, then that's his style which is 'irresistible'

Good style, sometimes said to be 'good' because it is in appropriate time and place.

Similarly, in architecture, 'modern style' may be good or appealing to one person, but not for others. 'Classical style' might be for a particular group, but not for other groups. Like music, some like music like jazz, some like dangdut. In the context of building design, this is apparently true.

Differences in each 'style' of architecture, which sometimes tries to appear to be the best among others, much criticized by humanists.

Style of architecture, regardless of whether or not used, is actually an additional factor in designing, which is like the kind of clothes. Everyone dressed, but with a different style.
