Bambu pengganti rooster untuk dinding / Bamboo replaces rooster for wall

Bamboo is more widely known as a material which can be obtained cheaply and easily. Increasingly is taking its role as a substitute for wood, metal and other materials because bamboo grows faster, as well as considered the most 'green' and fashioable material compared to other building materials. Compared with the use of cement material, using the bamboo for building increase energy savings up to seventh.

The use of hollow bamboo for wall, instead of rooster we can see in the work of architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe. This large porous walls can present a cool room with natural air flow through the holes. As an idea, we can also use this type of bamboo walls for insulation between rooms and garden or just make a gazebo behind a house.

For durable bamboo, we can use bamboo, which is preserved with chemicals. Besides an easy way to preserve the bamboo is to moisten it with diesel fuel.

Mengatasi iklim tropis panas berkaitan dengan orientasi rumah / Dealing with hot tropical climate related with house orientation

When designing a house, we need to consider the condition of orientation (direction) of the house and the existing climate. A house can be designed and constructed to maximize or minimize the impact of climate. Walls are made to protect the house from the sun or cold wind to protect the interior of the house from uncomfortable temperatures. Window can also be directed to cool down the tropical air that tends to heat and provide ventilation.

These structural considerations reduce the amount of energy needed to maintain comfort at home and thus help conserve nonrenewable resources which are precious. Interior design can also assist in this effort, either to complete structural design or provide temperature control even at home with solar orientation which is not good or heading west. Wide windows that lead to the west may have controls to prevent too much heat in, for example by applying a secondary skin. Floor and wall materials can be selected to create a feeling of cold to the touch.

Outside of this specific physical considerations, it is possible to create an atmosphere of warmth or coolness. A house can be designed with colors that will make the owner feel a cooler atmosphere. The people who live in hot, wet climate can choose to counteract the psychological effects by choosing cool colors and natural wood color, gray or rock colors, and natural colors from plants, as well as pattern and color to pleasant eyes and bring quality to the house apart from the existing air temperature. Texture can also increase the psychological effects: smooth surface feel cooler while the rough one makes people feel less need of air conditioning.

Natural ventilation

Tropical House Concept

To create healthy home for your family, natural ventilation is a vital element in house design, because bad air ventilation will trigger many respiratory disease. Natural ventilation is an important factor in healthy house concept. Especially in situation where air becomes more polluted this time; the health of dwellers in the family should be considered in design. Natural ventilation is needed because we have to keep our family healthy. Second reason: natural ventilation will minimize the use of electricity for Air Conditioner.

Inside a tropical house, to provide rooms with natural ventilation and natural light, the source can be from front yard, innercourt, and backyard. According to government's recomendation for simple house standard, rooms must be ventilated to natural circulation above 5 % from room's width. Windows and ventilation ought to be controllable as needed.

This picture show the yards as source of natural ventilation. From this sources, natural ventilation should be maximized for healthy house.

In traditional architecture, there has been a tradition in house design to maintain healthy houses. One example is by using ceiling to prefent heat to fall from the roof inside the house.

The picture above shows how ceiling can prevent heat from the roof. Logically, the higher the roof, the cooler the room below it can be, because heat is captured by insulation space below roof. In our traditional houses, usually there are holes to cross the hot air below roof.

Can air fans reduce heat? Yes, it helps the air moving to make our skin cooler. But the real condition is the air is still hot and is only flowing around the room. This is why it is suggested to pay attention to air temperature element.

Secondary skin concept (tropical house concept)

http://bopswave.googlepages.com/indonesiaflag.jpg Bahasa Indonesia

19 July 2008

Imagine a bright tropical house, that is comfortable with shade. Shading device like louvers is often used as secondary skin. Secondary skin concept for tropical houses has become popular lately. This concept blends with modern architecture concept by complementing a considerable solution to deal with tropical climate, which also has an aesthetic value.

What is secondary skin concept

Design by astudio

You might have read or know from TV shows about 'secondary skin concept' or second wall layer of a building. This concept is originated from an analogy; house as a human skin.

Biologically, human has skin, to protect human from many danger, virus, disease, and other thread outside human body. Skin has a function to manage relationship between body and outside body. For example, if it is too hot, human skin will react by keeping temperature stable, for example sweat.

Human also has a way to react to external condition for example, by using clothes. There are clothes for hot weather, cold weather, etc. Clothes can be made to fit our comfort.

In architecture, it is Known the concept Of building as human skin, that has a function to protect human body. Building can be designed, to fit tropical climate, from heat and rain, and from other climate related environmental condition.

'Secondary skin concept was derived from analogy of human skin and clothes, and this concept can be used whenever one layer of building 'skin' is not quite enough to deal with climate impact.

In the above sketch that I made, I describe one concept of secondary skin. Human inside a room is isolated by Wall and glass. Wood louvers act as 'secondary skin' to hold direct heat from the sun to directly enter the room. So in this example, heat will not directly enter the glass wall.

The house is using thousands of bottles for secondary skin.

To apply secondary skin at home

To apply secondary skin concept it is important not to be mistaken with creating building ornaments, because usually, house facade will look more aesthetic than using just a Single wall.

Many and more tropical houses use secondary skin concept. this is because tropical houses need more advanced concept than just a single wall concept. to apply secondary Skin concept for Your home consider these points;

When designing, observe the surrounding houses. are they comfortable enough? In term of air freshness. humidity, etc. If you feel that it is not really fresh and comfortable, consider to use secondary skin for your future home.

If your house is already been built, see if there is a possibility that you could better the level of air and natural light comfort by adding secondary skin.

In houses of tropical area, most secondary skin for buildings are made of wood louvers, steel, or other materials. One unique example is one house that was designed by Ridwan Kamil using bottles as secondary Skin. Other materials like bamboo, recycled material, glass, etc can be used innovatively

Level of human comfort in tropical area is quite specific. Some consider rather dark room is comfortable. How much natural light can get in to a room is one of main considerations beside air flow, humidity etc. Nowadays, glass material ate often being used. the impact is higher temperature level.

The use of secondary skin is quite similar to being below the shadow of a tree. You can imagine that being under the shadow of trees when the sun shine very hot is very comfortable.
